Emerging Market Strategic Corporate Finance
Study program


1.    Economic regional and local economic history. Prof H. Calvo (English) (3 hrs lecture 2 hrs case study) or The political / economic Organization environment of Latin America & Colombia. Prof. Yuri Gorbaneff (either in English or Russian) (3 hrs lecture 2 hrs case study and discussion) - 5 hrs. overall
2.    Structural Finance. Prof. Roberto Albisetti (International Finance Corporation, World Bank). Financial market evolution in developing countries.  Development model for financial intermediation (financial intermediaries). Fundamentals of financial crisis for the emerging markets and their teachings. 3 hrs lecture 3 hrs visit and discussion. (English) -Related visit/conference: Regional Port Facilities (Highly automated port operation for containers) and discussion with officers and moderated by Prof Albisetti.
3.    Corporate governance. Prof D. Londoño. How to implement better decision-making processes that do not only care for profitability, but also include further control and feedback mechanisms that help protect agents and their interests concerning the enterprise’s performance and development. 3 hrs lecture 2 hrs factual case study discussion. (English). A factual case shall be examined. Related visit/conference: A SME firm: shrimp processing factory
4.    Corporate Finance I. Prof Ignacio Vélez (English). Forecasting financial statements and Prospective Analysis. Construction of cash flows. 3 hrs lecture 2 hrs Hands on workshop.
5.    Corporate Finance II. Profs. Ignacio Vélez and/or Rauf Ibragimov. Principles of Cash Flow Valuation: Cost of capital and Valuation. 3 hrs lecture 2 hrs Hands on workshop. (English and/or Russian)
6.    Project funding. Prof J. Sierra. Alternative mechanisms and practices in funding projects, which are gaining momentum in diverse settings around the world where savings and investment are seen under a different light that do not consider only traditional risk assessment mechanisms. 3 hrs lecture 2 hrs factual case study discussion. A factual case shall be examined.
7.    Performance measurement and evaluation. Prof. Alla Bobyleva. Standard Ratio Analysis and Shortcomings of Accounting Numbers. Shareholder Value Approach and Metrics. Valuation in Emerging Markets, High-Growth Companies, Cyclical Companies. 3 hrs lecture 2 hrs case study discussion. (English and/or Russian) A factual case shall be examined. Related visit/conference: Tecnoají (hot pepper factory) and conference by its founder and president, Jorge Araújo.
8.    Innovation strategies for Value Creation. Prof J. Sierra. How to create effective competitive advantage by resourcing to knowledge creation/application in house and obtaining benefit from external availability of technological resources to be used, particularly in settings where the competitive edge is to be strengthened. 3 hrs lecture 2 hrs factual case study discussion.
9.    Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility. Prof D. Londoño. Creative approaches to build up strong organic bonds with a myriad of stakeholders that may both influence upon and be subjected to the influence of enterprises in a mutually beneficial relationship 3 hrs lecture 2 hrs factual case study discussion. A factual case shall be examined. Related visit/conference: Crepes & Wafles (gourmet fast food chain) and conference by its founder and president, Eduardo Maciá.

General Information & Conditions

•    Additional mini excursions will be available in late afternoon and evening based on participants interests.
•    Note. The company visits may be subject to further changes and substitutions based on company activities
•    The cost of the program is 2700 USD and it covers a two week program for the students, which include tuition, lodging (triple accommodation), meals on the campus and hotel, transfers, health insurance, except airfare, visa and meals while traveling.
